in English.Maybe they just weren't ambitious enough; in the words of guitarist Gary Duncan, "We had no ambition toward making records, we just wanted to have fun play some music, and make enough money to be able to afford to smoke pot".Sadly, today Quicksilver is too often overlooked as an essential classic rock experience. They made hippie music, simple straight forward lyrics, mostly love songs and some social commentary thrown in (from the freak point of view). But the two guitar attack of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan was generally a constant. However there is much to enjoy in all the bands phases from the heavy jamming of the first albums, through the hits of the Valente folk pop period (spiced up by Nicky Hopkins then Michael Lewis keyboards) and finally sweet cowboyish love songs like "Gypsy Lights" and "Don't Cry My Lady Love" Duncan, Freiberg and Lewis stretched Quicksilver into the Eighties with the the lost classic "Peace by Piece" where the band experimented with rap music and synthesized drums.Listen to Quicksilver, still jazzed after 30 years and sounding fresher than ever. After that you can fill in according to your taste.Although Quicksilver always had solid musicianship and free spirit, there is a noticeable difference in style along the way as members came and went.Try a link from our Happy Trails Link Exchange!Quicksilver Messenger Service is a 1968 album by Quicksilver Messenger Service. This was Quicksilver Messenger Service's first album, although they produced two songs for the soundtrack of "Revolution" previous to the release. There are three covers and three band compositions on the album, including the 12 minute closer "The Fool."Dino Valenti who was at that time in prison due to marijuana related offences.Quicksilver Messenger Service was one of San Francisco's original psychedelic bands of the late 1960s.Valente Takes Control 1.Quicksilver Messenger Service 3.Valente's involvement There is some confusion as to whether or not the group was formed around Dino Valente. It was Valente who organized the group. We were going to have leather jackets made with hooks that we could hook these wireless instruments right into. And I'm sitting there going, "This guy is gonna happen and we're gonna set the world on its ear."The next day, Valente was arrested for possession of marijuana, and spent the better part of the next two years in jail.Valente's, who had been in a band with Paul Kantner and David Crosby, had been released from jail. This new version of the band had its first paying gig in December 1965, playing for the Christmas party of the comedy troupe the Committee.Me and Freiberg were born on the same day, and Gary and Greg were born on the same day, we were all Virgos and Murray was a Gemini.First three albums Having split company with Murray, the band began a period of heavy touring on the West Coast of the United States.Capitol had failed to pick up a San Francisco hippie band during the first rush of record company interest and so Quicksilver managed to negotiate a better deal than many of their peers.Quicksilver released Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1968, followed by Happy Trails the following year. These two albums define a classic period in Quicksilver's career and are most strongly associated with their unique sound, emphasising extended arrangements.Cipolina's highly melodic, individualistic lead guitar style combined with Gary Duncan's driving guitar work showcased a jazzy rock style unparalleled in its day.Duncan left after the recording of Happy Trails. We'd been on the road for, really, the first time in our lives. And I left for a year and rode motorcycles and lived in New York and L.However, in the main this marked a turning point in the story of Quicksilver.Hopkins and Cipollina quit following these sessions.Hopkins continued his journeyman career, including playing with Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock.Gary Duncan resurrected the name and released the albums Peace by Piece in 1986, Shapeshifter Vols.Strange Trim in 2006, along with several live albums and a website, quicksilvermessengerservice.Of all the bands that came out of the San Francisco area during the late 60s, Quicksilver Messenger Service typified the style, attitude and sound of that era.Alexander 'Skip' Spence also spent a brief time with the band, before being whisked off to join the Jefferson Airplane as their drummer.Significant in Quicksilver's development was the almost immediate arrest and imprisonment of Valenti for a drugs offence.Gary Duncan and, replacing Sonoban, Greg Elmore.Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.The second collection, "Happy Trails", is now regarded as a classic.George Hunter and his Globe Propaganda company were responsible for some of the finest album covers of the 60s and Happy Trails is probably their greatest work. The live music within showed a spontaneity that the band were never able to recapture on subsequent recordings. The remaining trio of Valenti, Duncan, and Elmore hired replacements and cut another couple of albums before disbanding. Not many of Quicksilver's members are left, as John Cipollina passed away, May 29, 1989, the great Nicky Hopkins left us in September 1994 and Dino Valenti died November 16, 1994.Your search did not match any products.View or change your orders
