variety of the songs. This guy seemed to master all the styles one could
possibly imagine and used them with great taste and in a way that really
blended it into a universe that still was a logical whole. With that great
voice on top I was sold for good. Then there was this: most albums had an address of
the R.Well off course one of the first
things to look for was R.Stevie Moore was still around
and his cassette club was still operational and had a whopping 247 items
for sale.Much to my surprise they turned out to be as rich as his albums. The addiction demands about a cassette per month in my case, I've got 20
untill now, with 227 to go I will remain happy until February 2019.But now to our main character, how about him?He hasn't got the success that he deserved, that's
for sure, but does he care?Hot garlicky spaghetti suppers often sat
on my record player.Isn't that the general consensus??By mixing these your tapes almost feel
like radio shows. How do you blend them together? It was like putting all styles of music together
in a blender.PSF: Tell us something about your cassette club ....The RSMCassetteclub (now known as the CDRSM club)
has had its ups and downs. All ordering info is now exclusive to the glorious internet,
from the main www.The very concept of having too much to choose
from is really not of interest to me.What
amazes many people is that I've done what I have for such a long time.PSF: What record companies did pick you up?By far the most devoted label this
boy's ever had.Just my first, Phonography, available now.PSF: Tell us something about what the effect was
of moving from Nashville up North ...I'm referring to songs about sex or taping yourself whilst visiting
the toilet that are so deliciously politically incorrect (especially for
that time)
Thankfully, I was never incarcerated nor interrogated
by the feds because of my music. If I've got a musical idea in my head,
it doesn't matter if it's inspired by masturbation or an ironic sandwich
I ate.It's all
about sharing our humanity and all of the mundane or profane things we
do.PSF: Try and describe a RSM fan ...Would you expect there to be?One constant: they're
all "individualists."PSF: Can you describe a typical RSM day in the year
2000 ....Don't wanna depress you.PSF: How about your forthcoming European tour?Brief crazed acoustic duo sets, an easy task I look
forward to pulling off without a hitch.PSF: What about the internet: Your personal site
is growing so fast it seems that it'll soon choke the entire net ....Storage is on a WebTV account
on their server. You see, I have zero computer experience and still don't do
windows.Like my foray into video, I've used the internet to become
a diarist.PSF: Do you think you're disabled by talent? It sure has made it harder to be dumb
and play the music biz game. They've got a long history as being a pioneering
freeform college radio station with no formats, each DJ was in complete
control of what they played.Don't listen that often even though they still play my music.FMU, too, has had to adapt to the changing times.Just
like the audiotapes, but for the eyes).Love the worst noise as much as the best
melody. My 1988 album Teenage Spectacular is my most accessible,
by normal standards.PSF: Seems to me that the way you always let your
listeners into your life is kinda analogue to the way people who have a
webcam ...PSF: Where did your musical career start ....The only thing that matters.PSF: Can you mention some of the people whom you
have worked with ...Father Bob,
Dave Gregory, Chet Atkins, Perry Como, Jerry Reed, the Manhattans, Connie
Smith, Terry Burrows, Bill Anderson, Irwin Chusid, Pete Drake, uncle Harry
Palmer, Earl Scruggs, et al.PSF: Should I call you "R" or "Steve" or "R.PSF: Could you sing for us?Well that should give some insight on our hero. But above all: BUY HIS MUSIC!!If you have any comments, please mail me at alfred.Plautus
"aren't we, after all
all better actors than even Marlon Brando?Show Biz is obsolete"
RSM, "Show Biz is Dead" (1984)
What if the Beatles never existed?Stevie Moore, you might be
proving my point. But inasmuch as his achievements
have, until now, been grossly underrated, I feel it is
high time RSM was granted the privileged position he
deserves.July 2005 and
according to the news' section in his site there's
already a new one coming up). There seems to
be no end to it.And
probably that's why he hates the damn word."I'm not just putting out cassettes because they're
cheaper or because American Record Companies are
ignoring me.HOBBIES GALORE
"All it takes is insane persistence and a total
disregard for everything but getting the Yamp out if
you gotta howl at the moon.Following his dad's footsteps, young Stevie took piano
and guitar lessons.Moore spent most of his teenage life absorbing the
wonders of 60's music: Beatles, Zappa, Beach Boys,
early Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Kinks, Zombies, Traffic...Everything but country music.Dozens and dozens of tapes
were recorded and stored.Groups like Roxy Music, Sparks, XTC, P.Talking Heads started to play an heavy influence in
his music. That was enough to get the attention of New York's
underground magazine, Trouser Press.Power Pop
version of the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace" as well
as instant classics like "Conflict of Interests,"
"Bloody Knuckles" and "Teen Routines."Stevie Moore launched
the RSM Cassette Club.He made a catalogue that
included practically everything he had ever recorded.Ya gonna
approach Beethoven's Greatest Hits CD, or are ya gonna
do some research? In 1984, the independent label Cuneinform, released
What's the Point, one of Moore's most concise
albums. In the same year, French label New Rose
compiled a double album from the RSM vaults titled
Everything You Wanted To Know About R Stevie Moore
But Were Afraid To Ask (still one of the best
introductions to the work of Nashville's reclusive
genius)."Everyone, But Everyone," a
brilliantly haunting cover of Dylan's "Who Killed
Davey Moore" and the pure pop perfection of "Play
Myself Some Music" ("a heartbreaking ode to the
restorative powers of music").Mojo Magazine, Sept 2003."Good people are good because they've come to wisdom
through failure.Moore
acquired a home portastudio.Throughout the '90's and until now, dozens of new CD's
were recorded and released. After a 5 years pause, the
recording artisan is again exploding with fresh ideas.Go
into your Mind," an electrifying power pop version of
the Shaggs' "Philosophy of the World" and much, much
mo(o)re.His
Tapography was now fully available to the world, as
well as his albums.Everybody else in the "www.Inevitabilly, the web brought new awareness to Moore.Stevie gently declined:
"Thanks so very much for the incredible offer...Pop,
Folk, Psychedelia, Country, Funk, Noise,
Experimental...He created a body of work that was
wildly unpredictable, vibrantly messy and bursting
with ideas.Stevie's unique musical character.Even though history travels through twisted roads,
there's a strange kind of lesson to be learned here.Tacitus
RSM survived through more than 3 decades of obscurity.Fortunately, there is still an open end to this story. Now it's up
to millions of music lovers and "interpreters" around

bottomless world of talent."WA (from original 1975 RSM version).January 1977, Madison TN.You are being redirected.Stevie Moore by David Shrigley for BOMB, 2007.Stevie Moore is famous, among the musicians and critics who love his work, for not being famous.Georgia pretending to be a Wisconsin congressman.Copies of many BOMB issues are available for purchase.Magazine, New Art Publications, and its Contributors.
